The Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre in Nanton, Alberta is hosting its first Halloween Haunted Elevator event on October 31.
Rhian Llewellyn, a former grain elevator tour guide, came up with the idea after working there over the summer. He saw potential in the location and proposed the idea to the chairperson, who was supportive.
The Haunted Elevator will have two acts. The first will be family friendly and will not be scary. Monsters, ghosts, and ghouls will hand out candy to children as they walk through the elevator. The second act is intended for adults only and will be similar to a traditional haunted house, but scarier. The Haunted Elevator event will also include a classic, silent horror film that will be projected on the side of the elevator, a living fortune teller machine, and novelty photos.
Llewellyn believes the character of the grain elevator, which was constructed in 1929, will enhance the event. The organizers plan to take advantage of the grain elevator’s high ceilings and acoustic properties.
This is the first time the grain elevator will be hosting this type of event. Since it is new, the Haunted Elevator is being organized with the help of volunteers and donations of money and candy. The event’s organizers are still looking for more volunteers and donations. Llewellyn is pleased with the creativity that the volunteers have shown in designing and creating hand-made props.
The organizers and volunteers are hoping to draw a large crowd. All of the proceeds raised will go toward the cost of the event. If there is any money left, it will be used to host another Haunted Elevator next year. They hope to make next year’s event even better.
The organizers want the public to take more interest in Canada’s historic grain elevators so that they can be preserved.
